Rhs Awards Of Merit
     
Verbena bonariensis is spreading, weed-like, through my suburb and many others. Even though I quite like the purple coloured flowers I am shocked to read that the Royal Horticulture Society (UK) had presented an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) to this plant. Other, maybe more worthy, recipients of AGM's for 2001 were Magnolia 'Star Wars', Amaryllis belladonna, Caryota mitis (Fishtail Fern), Sambucus nigra 'Black Beautyš (Purple-leafed Elderberry), and Tillandsia cyanea (Pink Quill Bromeliad).
