Rose Black Spot

Rose Black Spot
Black spot can be identified by leaf yellowing and black spots on the leaves, these spots can reach 12mm across. The spots are circular in shape with irregular or fringed edges. Leaves turn yellow and drop off earlier than usual. Continued defoliation of plants causes them to become weak, resulting in die back and sometimes death.

Cause
Black spot is caused by a fungus called Marssonina rosae, it spreads by spores which can be transported in the air or in water. Black spot favours humid conditions, meaning if we have a wet Summer as predicted, it may cause a few problems on your Roses.

Treatment
Its important to dispose of any effected and fallen leaves to prevent the further spreading of spores. Start spraying fortnightly, alternate between Eco-Rose (or Eco-Fungicide they are they exact same thing) and Yates Rose Shield.

Prevention
As we all know, prevention is the best cure, take these precautions to reduce chance of infection.

* Make sure you don't plant Roses too close together, it reduces airflow and increases Humidity.
* Too many plants growing underneath Roses also reduces airflow, don't crowd with annuals.
* Keep roses well pruned, especially in the middle, this increases airflow through the foliage.
* Avoid watering late in the day, water early so that foliage does not sit wet over night.
