Pig Face (Carpobrotus glaucescens)
Pig Face (Carpobrotus glaucescens)

This Genus of succulents consists of around 30 species which are native to the coasts of Australia, South Africa, North and South America. C.glaucescens is probably the most common species, it can be found growing on numerous beaches around the country. This creeping plant has extremely thick and fleshy leaves around 10cm long and produces bright purple flowers with white centres, they usually about 6cm in diameter. Flowers make way for an edible fruit.

Care
Carpobrotus like a sandy dry position with full sun, if growing in pots use a cacti and succulent mix. Apart from a trim from time to time Carpobrotus are virtually maintenance free. Feed with a general purpose slow release fertiliser twice a year, liquid fertiliser can also be used every few weeks in warm weather but be careful not to over-water.

*look out for a new variety from Ozbreed called 'Aussie Rambler' with flowers up to 14cm in width!
