Miss Edna Mary Elizabeth Spurway was born 3rd of June 1910 and is known to "Teddy" to all who know her. She is the last living closest descendant of Granny Smith. Granny Smith lived at Eastwood and the Granny Smith Apple was produced from a seedling she found growing in her backyard.
Granny Smith's son-in-law James commenced propagating the apple in nurseries at Marsden Rd, Ermington.
Teddy's grandfather James was married to Granny Smith's daughter Maria Anne. James and brother George built and funded the Baptist church of Dundas in 1893 where Teddy still attends today.
The family heritage home still remains on Marsden Rd where Teddy lived for 87 years, before moving to the Baptist homes at Carlingford.
Teddy's father Fred Spurway, as well as running the nursery, became Mayor of Dundas in 1939 serving for many years. Teddy stepped into the role as Mayoress when her mother Elizabeth died in 1939.
She carried out out this duty as well as working on the family orchard at fruit season at Orange.
Teddy is very proud of her heritage and enjoys attending The Granny Smith Festival at Eastwood each year in the families honour.
The Granny Smith Festival celebrates 25 years this year itself in 2010. Be there on Saturday 16 October to join in the celebrations at the Eastwood Shopping Precinct and Eastwood Oval.
