Sedum or "Iceplant" are becoming more and more popular in Australian gardens, and deservedly so. They have succulent leaves so rarley ned water and flower in autumn when nothing much else does.
Description Sedum produce thick fleshy blue green leaves that make handsome foliage accents all summer. But its the large rounded heads of flower that colour the late summer and autumn garden. 'Autumn Joy' opens soft pink, turning salmon then bronze then coppery red as the season progresses.
Position All varieties thrive in full sun but will grow also well in part shade. Like most succulents they are not fussy about soil quality and can even handle quite a moist soil without rotting away.
Care Clumps need dividing from time to time to avoid overcrowding and lax growth habit. Sedum spectabile is also very beautiful with large heads of chalky mauve-pink flowers. Other great colours are also becoming available through garden centres and mail-order nurseries. Uses Butterfly attracting. Cottage gardens.
